The restomod phenomenon took off in recent years. It is a relatively recent phenomenon in the collector-car world. As a counterpoint to the perfect survivor madness, these new cars mix old and new technology to create the best of both worlds, matching classic styling with modern comfort, performance and reliability.
Be it a crazy Singer Porsche, an Alfa Romeo on steroids, a Mercedes bettered by AMG themselves, a modificated Bronco, the resto-mods is the promise land of beautiful, vintage, bodyworks on top of modern, state of the art, powertrains with performance figures that embarrass modern sports cars.
Evoluto Automobili is to be the next representative of this genre. Evoluto Automobili show proposed direction for a new project that’s aiming to transform a well-known 1980s sports car into a more timeless expression of a Ferrari V8. What started as a love of technology and a desire to preserve and truly make the most of theirs classic cars has evolved into one of the most exciting projects in Europe.
We want to learn more about this crazy project so today We talk with Callum Davis the founder of Evoluto Automobili.
WHAT IS YOUR STORY?
I grew up close by to Goodwood Motor Circuit and from a young age became fascinated with the beauty of the cars at the Circuit’s countless automotive events. I was raised with a passion. I currently run a company within the automotive industry and Evoluto is a mixture of business and my love for cars.
WHAT FASCINATES YOU SO MUCH ABOUT THE FERRARI F355/348?
The Ferrari F355 was my poster car and the first supercar I ever sat in at the age of 8 years old. To me it is the most understated and effortless Ferrari to date. It is proportioned perfectly.
Over time, I have come to understand and admire the Ferrari 348 and how under-appreciated it is as a raw driver’s car. The 348 has real racing history but lacks an ingredient that makes the F355 so timeless.
HAD YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH MANUFACTURING OR RESTORATION PRIOR?
The automotive company I run is involved with OEMs and suppliers within this space.
WHAT IS AN EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE MORE?
Evoluto Automobili is our company name, the car is Evoluto. Evoluto is latin for evolution. Evoluto is the evolution of a Ferrari 348 – it’s that simple really! We take the base car and strip it back to the chassis. It is then built from the ground up through a mixture of restoring original parts and adding new components. We change 90%+ of the car, including mechanicals, interior and exterior.
WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE DETAILS OF CHANGE?
We will be releasing a full list of changes and full specs in the coming weeks – so be sure to keep an eye on our journey.
CAN IT PROPERLY BE DESCRIBED AS A FERRARI?
(Is it a Ferrari in every sense?)
Evoluto is modifying the rather under-estimated Ferrari 348 by restoring and progressing it. It is not a replica. It has the analogue DNA of true Ferrari’s and this is evident in every aspect of the car. Our customers will be purchasing “the evolved” Ferrari.
HOW DID YOU PROCEED AFTER THE FIRST IDEAS AND DRAWINGS WERE COMPLETED?
That would be telling… but we simply started working on every aspect of the car from the front to the rear, no matter how small the component. We ask the question ‘can this be improved?’. If it can, we start working on how it can be improved. We have a long list of trusted suppliers whom we work with closely and who are partnered with us for the development of the project.
WHAT'S THE COMPANY'S PROCESS FOR COSTOM BUILDING? HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE PART OF THE TEAM?
We first bring in the 348 from a customer or supply them a base car if they do not have one already. We build a final spec with each customer and when approved, the ‘building’ starts. The process will follow the development cars process which is 1. Mechanical, 2. Exterior 3. Interior. Each build will take approx. 9 months. We are small and dedicated team.
WHAT WERE THE REACTIONS TO PROJECT
We have received very positive feedback regarding the renders, and we hope the reaction will be the same.
WHAT IS PRICE?
Price will be available soon, we can say the development vehicles are costly to say the least.
PROBABLY FOR THE SAME PRICE YOU COULD BUY A NEW PORSCHE, FERRARI OR ASTON MARTIN, SO WHY BUY AN EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI CAR?
We are offering a different version of reality to any new car available. This is an analogue car at its peak and is not following the same form of progression that OEM’s are following with unusable performance and electronic support systems.
We are building a car which encompasses the understated nature of the past Ferrari’s, the ability of a track focussed machine and the usability of a more modern car. To us, this is a unique blend.
Evoluto is a car with natural soul and personality.
HOW MANY CARS DO YOU PLAN TO BUILD?
It will be a very limited run.
HOW EASY IS IT TO HAVE AN EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI SERVICED AND MAINTAINED?
Easier than a stock 348 or F355.
A big part of the development is focused on usability and reliability. A small example is that we upgrade the fuel tank so the notoriously ‘difficult to service’ cam-belts can be changed without removing the engine.
We are thinking about real-world ownership here.
WHAT ABOUT PARTS FOR THIS CAR?
There will be a global supply of parts.
WHAT IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF THE UK AND AM INTERESTED IN BUYING YOUR CAR?
We are based in the UK and our cars will be built here.
Our cars will be sold worldwide.
ARE EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI ALL ABOUT PERFORMANCE?
No, the main focus for this project is to create a car you can drive at 100% and feel 100% of it, rather than build a car that you can only use 50% of as it is over capable.
We are creating a car that is fun, rewarding and engaging.
The car will be quick (able to keep up with a modern V8 Ferrari), however we are interested in competing with modern day supercars that are electronically supported.
DO THE PERFORMANCE UPGRADES COMPROMISE THE COMFORT AND USABILITY OF THE CARS?
Quite the opposite. The ride is improved over a stock 348 and the usability is comparable to a modern-day supercar. We have developed it so that it could be used as a daily driver should you wish.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD?
9 months approx.
WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP FOR AN INTERESTED POTENTIAL OWNER?
Any potential owners should contact us via our website. A member of our team will then be in contact.
WHAT ABOUT VALUES. EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI NOW, IS IT A GOOD INVESTMENT?
The quality of our work is recognizable, but this is not a car to sit solely as an investment.
Evoluto is a car to be driven and enjoyed.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR EVOLUTO AUTOMOBILI?
We have many future ideas and plans including a Racing Edition.
Thanks for taking the time, and We look forward to demonstrating of the finished car.
